Insurance programs for Kyoto University students

The National Health Insurance (NHI) does not fully cover fees for the treatment of injuries that arise from accidents, and damages which you may cause to someone else's property or another person.

Unanticipated situations such as accidents or illnesses may result in an overwhelming financial burden.

Enrolling in an insurance program is, therefore, highly recommended.

In case of illness/injury

  • Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (Gakkensai, compulsory in principle)
Compensation against unexpected accidents during commutes, extracurricular activities, and education/research activities at the University. Apply at the Student Affairs Division.

  • Student Mutual Benefit, Life Mutual Insurance (optional)

In event of causing bodily injury or property damage to a third party

  • Personal Liability Insurance for Students While Pursuing Education and Research (Futaibaiseki, compulsory in principle)

In case of damages to rented apartments

  • Student Mutual Benefit, Fire Mutual Insurance (optional)
Covers damages to a rented apartment resulting from an accidental fire and/or water leak. Apply at Kyoto University Co-op.

For those who use a bicycle (Bicycle Insurance)

From 1 April 2018, Kyoto City urges all bicycle users to enroll in commercial insurance or mutual aid insurance to pay any necessary damages compensation in preparation for an accident. Bicycle insurance compensates for damages in case of injury or death to others while riding a bicycle or compensation for medical expenses incurred in case of injury.

For Kyoto University international students

If you have enrolled in the Kyoto University CO-OP’s Personal Liability Insurance, you do not need to enroll in the extra bicycle insurance.
