Through innovative area studies approaches focusing on the analysis of inter-area relationships and inter-area comparisons, the Center for Integrated Area Studies seeks to deepen understanding of modern global regions. The center has also established the new field of area informatics, which merges area studies with informatics. CIAS was reestablished as a Joint Usage/Research Center in 2009.
