FY2023 training

In accordance with the Kyoto University Action Plan for the Promotion of Research Integrity, the University is promoting knowledge and understanding of research ethics, including through training that in FY2023 is being implemented in the form of an "APRIN e-learning program (eAPRIN)". APRIN is the Association for the Promotion of Research Integrity, which has been offering educational materials and study sessions on related topics since 2016.

Those applicable are requested to retake the University's ethics training every three years. The current version, introduced in FY2021 and now in its third year, is mandatory for all those who have not completed it.

Undergraduate and non-regular students (eg research students and auditors) and non-research staff are not required but highly encouraged to receive the training, whereas those expecting to co-author a study must do so regardless of student or employment status.

Who is required to take the course?

The "京都大学 全学共通基礎コース (Kyoto University Common Foundational Course) (2021)" is mandatory for everyone engaged in research (including students) or educational endeavors at Kyoto University. Please see this FAQ for a list of specific employment positions for which the course is required.

Notes

  • Those who took the "京都大学 全学共通基礎コース (Kyoto University Common Foundational Course) (2021)" or the "JST Course (1) Biomedical" during or after April 2021 are exempt.
  • Those who took the "JST Course (1) Biomedical" during or before March 2021 are required to take the course. This applies to those who retook the JST Course during or after April 2021; completion dates for this course would not have been updated. 
  • Those who have completed one of the following still need to take the course:
    - 京都大学 医の倫理委員会受講者コース(Kyoto University Graduate School and Faculty of Medicine: Ethics Committee Course)
    - JST Course (2) Engineering
    - JST Course (3) Humanities
  • With the exception of part-time lecturers, those affiliated with another institution are also required to take the course. This applies to those who have completed an equivalent training course at their affiliated institution. Those wishing to be exempted from the "京都大学 全学共通基礎コース (Kyoto University Common Foundational Course) (2021)" may present a course completion certificate from their institution and consult with their departmental office at Kyoto University.
  • Those required to take the "京都大学 全学共通基礎コース (Kyoto University Common Foundational Course) (2021)" will have their eAPRIN accounts set up by the Research Promotion Department, so that they will not need to register by themselves.
  • Those who have had their eAPRIN accounts newly set up will receive an email containing the registered information (including their initial password) at their KUMail/KUMOI address. This email will have the following sender and subject line.
    - Sender: no-reply*aprin.or.jp (where * will be @)
    - Subject: APRIN eラーニングプログラム（eAPRIN）: [eAPRIN]アカウント発行のお知らせ／Your Account
    Those whose accounts were registered during or before March 2020 and who forgot their password are advised to refer to the Research Integrity Training e-Learning (eAPRIN) Manuals.

Training for JST project participants

In addition to Kyoto University's research integrity training, researchers involved in projects funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) are required to take a course designated by JST. For such researchers, the University provides the following courses as requested by JST.

JST Project Participants' Courses

  • JST Course (1) Biomedical
  • JST Course (2) Engineering
  • JST Course (3) Humanities

JST project participants not affiliated with Kyoto University

External researchers may be eligible to take a JST Course at Kyoto University as detailed below.

Eligibility

JST Courses are open to researchers and students who are participating in a JST project led by a principal investigator (PI) from Kyoto University and who are unable to take a JST-designated training course at their institutions.

Application method

Those wishing to take a JST Course are asked to email the information required for account registration (specified below) to the Research Promotion Division (see Contact below).

Availability to those not required to take a JST Course

Students, faculty, and staff for whom JST Courses are not mandatory (such as undergraduate students, non-regular students, and faculty and staff without an SPS-ID) may apply to take one by emailing the information required for account registration (specified below) to the Research Promotion Division (see Contact below).

Information required for account registration
  1. Name in kanji, if available
  2. Name in Roman letters
  3. Department (or institution in the case of external students)
  4. Title/status (including the year of study in the case of students)
  5. Email address (preferably a KUMail/KUMOI address, but a departmental address issued by the University may also be used; a personal email address can be accepted if neither is available.)
  6. Names of the research project and of its representative
