Kyoto University was accredited as a University for International Research Excellence on 31 July 2026, and on 7 August, Japan's science minister approved the University's "Research System Strengthening Plan for Universities for International Research Excellence".
Kyoto University is embarking on a new chapter as a "University for International Research Excellence." The University will steadily implement the structural reforms outlined in the plan to establish a research university that ranks among the world's best, meet society’s expectations, and contribute to society.
Message from President Nagahiro Minato
Kyoto University was accredited as a University for International Research Excellence on July 31, 2026, and on August 7, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology approved the university’s Research System Strengthening Plan.
As a University for International Research Excellence, Kyoto University aims to implement fundamental structural reforms to realize the Vision outlined below:
- Contribute to addressing diverse social issues and foster innovation that can transform society through the generation of knowledge by unrestricted and original research.
- Cultivation of outstanding researchers who will lead global academia and highly skilled professionals who can thrive on the global stage.
- As a comprehensive university engaged with the international community, form an international knowledge hub that attracts diverse human resources from around the world.
Kyoto University is embarking on a new chapter as a University for International Research Excellence, and will steadily implement a 25-year plan. Beginning with the introduction of the Department System, the university will focus on strengthening its research capabilities while prioritizing its investment in people. Particular emphasis will be placed on efforts to support the early-career researchers who will shape the future.
Furthermore, to realize its Vision for International Research Excellence, the university will steadily implement structural reforms, while further developing the institutional culture of academic freedom that it has maintained since its founding, thereby establishing a research university that ranks among the world’s best. As a hub of knowledge attracting outstanding researchers from around the globe, the university will generate world-class knowledge, contribute to society, and meet its expectations.
