Continuing a long tradition of collaboration between France and Japan in fostering and structuring international mathematical research, the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) welcomed on 8 June 2026 a delegation from the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).
The CNRS delegation consisted of Professor Frédéric Hérau, deputy scientific director of CNRS Mathematics (also known as the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences and their Interactions, or INSMI), and Professor Bruno Le Pioufle, director of the CNRS Tokyo Office. Representing RIMS were Director Yoshinori Namikawa, Professor Akio Tamagawa, and Program-Specific Researcher (RIMS Project Researcher) Benjamin Collas, who is one of the coordinators of the RIMS-CNRS International Research Network "Arithmetic & Homotopic Galois Theory IRN (AHGT)".
With a network of more than 80 institutes worldwide, including one in Tokyo, CNRS pursues its mission of advancing, consolidating, and structuring scientific research through a global and inclusive approach. Japan is among CNRS' leading international partners in terms of scientific exchanges, collaborative projects, and research activities. RIMS welcomes approximately 4,500 visitors each year, including around 600 from overseas, and hosts more than 85 scientific events annually. Through these activities, as the unique International Joint Usage/Research Center in mathematics in Japan, RIMS fulfills its national mission as a gateway between Japan and the international mathematical community. French researchers consistently rank among the top 3 of RIMS’ visitors and collaborators.
At the 8 June meeting, participants emphasized the importance of long-standing and visible institutional frameworks in promoting and sustaining international research. Both parties recognized each other's institution as key partners in leading the development of mathematical sciences: CNRS as a central hub of excellence for the advancement and the dissemination of scientific research at the international level; RIMS as a distinguished scientific partner for exploring new research frontiers, educating early-career researchers, and supporting the dissemination of Japanese mathematical sciences both within Japan and abroad.
The discussions reaffirmed the mutual trust shared by both institutions and their strong commitment to developing a long-term vision for cooperation. Both parties expressed their full support for the creation and implementation of ambitious and fruitful collaborative programs in the mathematical sciences.
