On 17 November 2020, the Graduate School of Economics announced that it will launch a joint master's degree program in September 2021 with the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Glasgow, and the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Barcelona. The plan was approved on 22 October by the education ministry MEXT.

In this two-year "International Joint Master Degree Program in Global Markets, Local Creativities", students will spend their first semester at the University of Glasgow in the UK, the second semester at the University of Barcelona in Spain, and the final two semesters at Kyoto University, as they study for a degree to be awarded jointly by the three universities. The joint-degree program is one of seven "study tracks" available on the integrated "Erasmus Mundus International Master Degree Program in Global Markets, Local Creativities (GLOCAL)" run by a consortium of seven universities in Europe, Latin America, and Japan.

The new joint degree program is designed to provide students with international experience and know-how, as well as interdisciplinary academic and practical training, by leveraging the intellectual, human, and institutional resources of the consortium members, who represent seven innovative cities across the world.
