KIZUNA presents bamboo basket weaving class (25 August 2017)

Published on

Student Lounge KIZUNA's August event was a bamboo basket weaving class, held on Friday 25 August with instruction provided by professional craftsmen from Yokoyama Bamboo Products & Co.

After receiving brief guidance from the craftsmen, participants worked on making a shikainamihana -style basket, designed after a four-petaled, wave-patterned flower. They handled the bamboo strips with great care, sometimes moisturizing them with water spray to make them more flexible. Weaving these materials into a basket shape still proved challenging for many of the participants, but everyone eventually mastered the technique with the instructors' help.

The participants appeared to be deeply impressed with the bamboo basket's intricate structure, as well as the art of making three dimensional crafts without using glue or pins.

The event provided a great opportunity for everyone to experience a traditional Japanese craft while making new friends.
