From 1 July through 8 August, the Institute of Advanced Energy (IAE) hosted an internship program, entitled the ASEAN Young Researcher Training Program in the Energy Field, in collaboration with the Graduate School of Energy Science. Taking part were two students from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), Thailand: undergraduate Ms Kamonchanok Rueangon and postgraduate Mr Ibrahim Ammar. KMITL is a member of the Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Platform (JASTIP), headquartered at the Kyoto University ASEAN Center, Bangkok.
During the five weeks of training, Ms Rueangon, who had studied gallium-doped ZnO (GZO) conductive transparent films at KMITL, produced an aluminum-doped ZnO film and compared it with a GZO film, such as by annealing them under various conditions. Mr Ammar, meanwhile, built on his knowledge of titanium dioxide (TiO2) to produce a TiO2 coating film using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Working on these projects, both students acquired a wide variety of lab skills, including sputtering and surface characterization.
The interns also had opportunities to enjoy summer in Kyoto in the company of their Japanese peers, attending a fireworks display and Yoi-yama (Gion Festival Eve) festivities together, even wearing yukata for the former occasion.
The organizers hope that these experiences will contribute not just to the participants' ongoing studies, but also to greater KU-KMITL collaboration at JASTIP.
