Emergency Student Support Plan: Emergency measures to support students facing financial difficulties due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

Kyoto University is implementing a further one billion yen support plan for students who face difficulty continuing their studies due to a sudden change in their household income or a significant decrease in income from part-time employment due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.

It is not currently possible to predict how the situation with regards to the coronavirus will develop or when the issue will be resolved. However, Kyoto University will continue to make every effort to support its students to ensure that they will not be forced to give up their studies due to financial difficulties, and that they can continue to receive their intended education.

New Support Measures

  • Emergency benefit-type scholarship
    120,000 yen will be provided to students who face difficulty continuing their studies due to the decreased income of their parents or other persons responsible for the payment of their tuition fees.
  • Expansion of tuition fee exemptions
    Expanded tuition exemptions shall be provided to students who have become eligible due to the decreased income of their parents or other persons responsible for the payment of their tuition fees, including the granting of full tuition exemptions to students who would normally be eligible for half tuition exemptions, etc.
  • Employment of students as TAs or OAs to assist with online classes
    The university will employ graduate students as teaching assistants (TAs) and undergraduate students as office assistants (OAs) to enable the smooth implementation of online classes and provide student support.

Ongoing Support Measures

  • Lending mobile routers for online classes
    Students who do not have sufficient internet facilities to take online classes at home may borrow mobile routers (Wi-Fi routers) from the university free of charge.
  • Extended deadline for the payment of tuition fees
    The deadline for the payment of tuition fees for the first semester of 2020 has been extended to 20 August 2020 (from the original deadline of 31 May 2020).
  • Extended application deadline for tuition fee exemption
    Applications for tuition fee exemptions from students who face difficulty paying tuition fees due to the spread of the novel coronavirus shall be accepted until 25 May 2020 (the original deadline was in early April).
