GSAIS' 6th symposium explores role of human survivability studies in "Bridging the Divide Between Science and Culture" (7 December 2017)

On 7 December 2017, the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability (GSAIS, or "Shishu-Kan") hosted its sixth international symposium under the theme, "Bridging the Divide Between Science and Culture: The Role of Human Survivability Studies".

Held in the Symposium Hall of the International Science Innovation Building, the event opened with remarks from GSAIS Dean Hajime Takara. This was followed by a keynote lecture by Dr John Crowley, chief of section, research, policy, and foresight at UNESCO's Social and Human Sciences Sector, entitled "Representing the Anthropocene".

Three sessions -- each comprised of two presentations and a discussion -- explored: "Overcoming the Divides in Human Knowledge: Epistemological Paradigms and Cross-Cultural Dialogue", "The Science of Cultural Heritage Preservation", and "The Fusion of Art and Technology and Opportunities to Overcome the Science-Culture Gap".

Before the first coffee break, GSAIS doctoral candidate Charles Boliko introduced the student research posters on display outside the hall, inviting attendees to view them and ask the presenters questions.

The main program wrapped up after the second break with a round-table discussion, held with all of the seven presenters: Dr Crowly; Dr Pierre Caye, director of research at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), France; Dr Shunsaku Miyagi, representative director of Byodoin Temple; Professor Naoko Tosa of the Kyoto University Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies (ACCMS); and Professor Masakatsu Fujita, Professor Shuichi Kawai, and Associate Professor Liang Zhao of GSAIS. The lively session addressed a wide range of relevant topics, as well as a number of comments and questions from the audience.

The event concluded on a high note with remarks from GSAIS Program-Specific Professor Masao Mitsuyama.
