Following the international outbreak of new-type influenza in April 2009, Kyoto University announced its policy to inhibit the spread of the virus.

In August of this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a statement to the effect that the H1N1 influenza virus is now moving into a post-pandemic period, and is expected to take on the behavior of a seasonal influenza virus. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan has also announced that the virus should be dealt with as a typical seasonal influenza virus provided it does not display any characteristics to the contrary.

In accordance with the above assessments, Kyoto University has also decided to treat the H1N1 influenza virus as a seasonal influenza virus.

In the event of influenza infection, we request that infected persons take appropriate action as detailed below, and endeavor to prevent the spread of the virus.

  1. In the event that students, faculty and staff etc. are infected with influenza, the infected persons must remain at home for a period of 48 hours after the alleviation of symptoms, in accordance with the university’s health and safety regulations.
Note: this does not apply to those who have been examined by a physician and advised that there is no risk of them spreading the infection.
  2. In the event that family members or cohabitants etc. of students, faculty and staff are infected with influenza, they may still attend classes or their place of work provided thorough precautions are taken to prevent the spread of infection. If the person develops symptoms associated with influenza, however, they must immediately return home and take appropriate action.
