UPDATE (7 October 2026): The figures for applications and early-career researchers in the second paragraph have been corrected.

The Kyoto University Asian Studies Unit (KUASU), Center for the Promotion of Interdisciplinary Education and Research, hosted the 19th Next-Generation Global Workshop (NGGW) from 26 to 27 September 2026 under the theme "Reimagining Care across Borders: Vulnerability, Mobility, and Social Innovation".

The 19th NGGW received 45 applications from around the world and welcomed 21 early-career researchers, selected from universities in Germany, France, Hungary, Sweden, Taiwan, Japan, and elsewhere. In addition, 14 faculty members from Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia, Germany, France, Finland, and Sweden participated as commentators.

The two-day workshop featured research presentations and discussions on a wide range of topics related to care, including the mobility and belonging of people across borders, social vulnerability, care and mutual support, technology and social innovation, and migration and labor. The concept of care itself was also reconsidered from various perspectives.

The afternoon of the second day featured a Commentators Session, in which the participating faculty members introduced their respective research and areas of expertise.

Participants shared positive feedback throughout the event, with some commenting that it was a valuable opportunity to broaden the scope of their research. These responses reaffirmed the significance of NGGW in fostering early-career researchers and building international academic networks.

KUASU will continue to promote international academic exchange among the next generation of researchers and work to build a foundation for early-career scholars to engage and thrive in the international academic community.
