Professor Kazutoshi Mori from the Graduate School of Science has been awarded the Shaw Prize, an academic award presented by a Hong Kong-based foundation, for his role in the discovery of the "unfolded protein response of the endoplasmic reticulum".

The award, which Professor Mori shares with Professor Peter Walter from the University of California, San Francisco, is in the category of Life Science and Medicine.

Established in 2002 by the late Sir Run Run Shaw, a Hong Kong media mogul, the Shaw Prize has been conferred annually since 2004, and is being presented for the 11th time this year.

Professor Mori is the second Japanese national to have won the prize after Professor Shinya Yamanaka, Director of Kyoto University’s Center for iPS Cell Research and Application.

The award ceremony is scheduled for 24 September 2014.
