Greetings at the ceremony commemorating the completion of the Sekitei Ward of the Kyoto University Hospital (May 18, 2010)

Hiroshi MATSUMOTO, the 25th President

Early summer has arrived with a refreshing breeze. On this fine day, I would like to thank Mr. Hiroshi Yamauchi, advisor to Nintendo Co. Ltd., and all other guests and involved parties for taking time out of your busy schedules to be a part of this ceremony commemorating the completion of the Sekitei Ward of the Kyoto University Hospital. Let me extend to you all a warm welcome.

The Sekitei Ward, whose ribbon has just been cut, was built with a considerable donation from the private assets of Advisor Yamauchi of Nintendo, who viewed the 40-year-old South Ward and wished to see best medical practices provided at the newest facility. On behalf of Kyoto University, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Yamauchi for his generosity.

The Kyoto University Hospital serves multiple roles as an educational facility to foster medical personnel, a research facility for the research and development of new medical technology, and a core medical facility providing sophisticated medical treatment, and therefore, enhancement of its hospital operations as well as its facilities and equipment is essential.

The completion of Sekitei Ward, which will function as the core of the sophisticated medicine surrounding cancer treatment at the Kyoto University Hospital, constitutes an enhancement of facilities and equipment. Now, the Hospital must strive for enhancement of operation.

Kyoto University Hospital provides Japan's most cutting-edge medicine, and I have been told that the Hospital will establish a multidisciplinary cancer treatment system centered on Sekitei Ward. I am aware that many efforts have borne fruit, including the establishment of the Cancer Center, and achieving the status of a Designated Cancer Care Hospital. I ask all hospital staff and faculty members to unite as one in making further efforts to improve and enhance the Hospital.

I hope that the opening of the Sekitei Ward will serve as an opportunity for the Kyoto University Hospital to make further and wider social contributions as the venue for education, research and treatment. Thank you all for helping us celebrate this occasion, and I extend to you all my best wishes. Thank you.
