Kyoto University Hospital, along with the Nuclear Safety Research Association, co-hosted the Regional Forum on Radiation Emergency Medicine (Kyoto Prefecture), held at the hospital. The forum aimed to provide and organize knowledge on the part of medical staff members who are expected to engage in the diagnosis and treatment of radiation-exposed patients as well as to strengthen reciprocal networks among related bodies (such as fire stations and governments). Sixty-seven people from inside and outside of the university participated in the forum.
After an opening address by Professor Kaoru Koike from Kyoto University Hospital (Department of Primary Care and Emergency Medicine), the following lectures were given: "What is Radiation? Bonfire (Exposure) and Paint (Contamination)" by Dr. Hideyuki Matano from Fukui Prefectural Hospital (head physician, Department of Emergency Medicine), "Response to Contamination in Emergency Radiation Medicine" by Naoyuki Yamamoto (deputy director of the Nuclear Safety Research Association), and "Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Radiation Syndromes: Clinical Experience from the Treatment of Patients from the JCO Criticality Accident" by Professor Emeritus Kazuhiko Maekawa (University of Tokyo) and Professor Taira Maekawa (Kyoto University Hospital, Department of Transfusion Medicine and Cell Therapy). Following the lectures, a tabletop exercise titled "Understanding the System in the Kyoto Prefecture Region: Responses to Four Cases" was provided by Professor Koike and Deputy Director Yamamoto, which prompted an active exchange of views among participants.
