The Lasker Award ceremony was held at the Pierre Hotel in New York, with Professor Shinya Yamanaka, Director of the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application, receiving the 2009 Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award. From Kyoto University, Professor Kohei Shiota, Executive Director/Executive Vice President, also attended. In front of approximately 300 participants, including past laureates, a statue and the award money were presented to Professor Yamanaka. In his acceptance speech, Professor Yamanaka said, "I was not successful as an orthopedic surgeon, but I am happy I could contribute in the field of basic research. I will continue my efforts so as to realize human application of the iPS research as soon as possible." The Lasker Award is the most prestigious medical award in the United States, and is awarded to researchers yielding outstanding results in the fields of basic research and clinical medicine.
