Hiroshi Matsumoto, 25th President of Kyoto University

Message of Congratulations on the 80th Anniversary of National Taiwan University

松本総長It is my great honor to express, on behalf of Kyoto University, my congratulations on the 80th anniversary of National Taiwan University.

Since its establishment in 1928, National Taiwan University has been at the heart of scholarship in Taiwan and has long been internationally respected for its achievements in education and research.

A General Memorandum for Academic Cooperation and Exchange was concluded between National Taiwan University and Kyoto University in 2005, and the two institutions are engaged in fruitful academic collaboration and cooperative research undertakings, including the exchange of researchers from a diverse range of fields ranging from advanced sciences to the humanities. In addition to the general memorandum, a Student Exchange Agreement was also concluded in the same year which has greatly enhanced student exchange activities between our two institutions in many ways, including a successful distance learning program. Furthermore, as an active member of both the Association of Pacific Rim Universities and the Association of East Asian Research Universities, National Taiwan University plays a vital role in education and research cooperation in the Asia Pacific and East Asian regions.

In our mission statement, Kyoto University states its commitment to pursue harmonious coexistence within human and ecological community on this planet. In order to achieve a sustainable society, we must first aim to achieve such harmony within the global community. It is my sincere hope that both National Taiwan University and Kyoto University will further collaborate on the advancement of research which will contribute to the achievement of that goal, and work towards the realization of a sustainable global community for the 21st century.

I would like to express my hopes, not only for the continuing success and further development of our collaborative undertakings, but also for the continuing success and further achievements of National Taiwan University itself. Once again, I would like to offer my congratulations to National Taiwan University on this most auspicious occasion.
