Welcome speech for newly enrolled foreign students
みなさん、こんばんは。4か国語で、簡単に挨拶します。
Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I’d like to say a few words of welcome in four languages.
京都大学へ新しく入学された222名の留学生の皆さんを、京都大学を代表して歓迎します。
As a representative of Kyoto University I would like to welcome all 222 newly enrolled foreign students.
今、京都大学は、世界中の76の大学や研究機関などと交流協定を結んでおり、
また京都大学には全部で1275名の留学生がいます。
Kyoto University currently has exchange agreements with 76 research institutions around the world. There are also 1275 foreign students studying at the university.
京都は、最近100万年の活断層運動でできた盆地にあり、
盆地の地下の厚い堆積層には、豊富な地下水があります。
Kyoto is situated in a basin that has been formed over a million years of fault line movements. In the deep sedimentary layers beneath this basin is a rich source of subterranean water.
その地下水を使って、古都の文化が発展しました。
おいしい伏見の日本酒、豆腐や湯葉、友禅染、茶の湯などが生まれました。
それらをぜひ体験してください。
Much of the ancient capitals cultural heritage was developed with the use of this water. I encourage you all to enjoy the cultural wonders that were born here; the delicious Fushimi sake, the Yuzen dyeing process, tofu and yuba, and of course our tea.
京都大学のキャンパスで、皆さんがたくさんの友人をつくり、
古都の文化に触れる機会を持つことを願っています。
I hope that you will all be able to make many friends and experience many of the ancient capitals cultural wonders while you are here on our campus.
