1897 June Kyoto Imperial University was founded by Imperial Ordinance No. 209. It was composed of Colleges of Law, Medicine, Letters, and Science and Engineering.
1899 Sept Colleges of Law and Medicine opened.
Dec The University Library and the University Hospital opened.
1903 Apr The Fukuoka College of Medicine was established. (In April 1911 it was separated from Kyoto Imperial University and attached to Kyushu Imperial University.)
1906 Sept The College of Letters opened.
1914 July The College of Science and Engineering was divided into the College of Engineering and the College of Science.
1919 Feb. The Imperial University Law was enacted and the Colleges were renamed Faculties.
May The Faculty of Economics was established
1923 Nov The Faculty of Agriculture was established.
1924 May The Experimental Farm and the University Forest attached to the Faculty of Agriculture were established.
1926 Oct The Institute for Chemical Research was established.
1939 Aug The Institute for Research in Humanities was established.
1941 Mar The Tuberculosis Research Institute was established. (In June 1967 it was renamed the Chest Disease Research Institute and renamed the Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences.)
Nov The Engineering Research Institute was established. (In April 1971 it was renamed the Institute of Atomic Energy, and again in May 1996 as the Institute of Advanced Energy.)
1944 May The Wood Research Institute was established. In April 2004, it was reorganized and renamed the Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere.
1946 Sept The Research institute for Food Science was established. In April 2001 it was closed to merge with the Graduate School of Agriculture.
1947 Oct Kyoto Imperial University was renamed Kyoto University
1949 May The National School Establishment Law was enacted. Kyoto University was reorganized under the new educational system and the former Third High School (Dai San Kou) was annexed to the university. The Faculty of Education was established.
Sept The Branch School of Kyoto University (Bunko) was opened on the campus of the former Third High School to provide education in the liberal arts.
1951 Apr The Disaster Prevention Research Institute was established.
1953 Apr The Graduate School under the new educational system was established.
Aug The Research Institute for Fundamental Physics was established. In June 1990 it was renamed the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics.
1954 Apr The Bunko was renamed the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
1955 July The Graduate School of Medicine was established.
1956 Apr The Institute for Virus Research was established.
1960 Mar The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established.
1962 Apr The Institute of Economic Research was established.
1963 Apr The Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences was established.

1966 Apr The Center for Student Health was established.
1967 June The Primate Research Institute was established.
1969 Apr The Data Processing Center was established. In April 2002 it was reorganized and named the Academic Center for Computing and Multimedia Studies.
1971 Apr The Radioisotope Research Center was established.
1972 May The Research Center for Sports Science was established.
1975 Apr The College of Medical Technology was established.
1976 May The Plasma Physics Laboratory was established.
1977 Apr The Environment Preservation Center was established.
July The Center for Archaeological Operations was established.
1978 Apr The Educational Center for Information Processing was established. In April 1997, it was reorganized and renamed the Center for Information and Multimedia Studies, in April 2002, it was reorganized and renamed the Academic Center for Computing and Multimedia Studies.
1980 Apr The Research Center for Medical Polymers and Biomaterials was established. In June 1990, it was reorganized and renamed the Research Center for Biomedical Engineering. In May 1998 it was closed to merge with the Frontier Medical Sciences.
1981 Apr The Radio Atmospheric Science Center was established. In April 2000, it was reorganized and renamed the Radio Science Center for Space and Atmosphere, in April 2004, it was reorganized and renamed the Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere.
1986 Apr The Center for African Area Studies was established.
1988 Apr The Center for Molecular Biology and Genetics was established.
1990 June The Center for Student Exchange was established.
1991 Apr The Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies was established
Apr The Center for Ecological Research was established.
1992 Oct The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was reorganized as the Faculty of Integrated Human Studies.
1994 June The Research Center for Higher Education was established.
1995 May The Venture Business Laboratory was established.
1996 May The Graduate School of Energy Science was established, replacing The Plasma Physics Laboratory.
The Institute of Atomic Energy was reorganized and renamed the Institute of Advanced Energy.
The Center for African Area Studies was reestablished as an intramural institution.
The Student Counseling Center was established. In June 1999, it was closed and the Counseling Center established.
1997 Apr The Kyoto University Museum was established.

1998 May The Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies was established.
