The seventh presentation ceremony for the Tachibana Award for Most Outstanding Female Researcher, celebrating distinguished achievements by early-career female researchers at Kyoto University, was held on 3 March 2015.
The ceremony opened with an address, including a briefing on the selection process, by the chair of the selection committee, Professor Kayo Inaba, Executive Vice-President for Gender Equality, International Affairs, and Public Relations. Then, Professor Junichi Yamagiwa, President of Kyoto University, presented certificates and plaques to the FY2014 awardees, Ms Megumi Shidatsu, PhD candidate at the Graduate School of Science (Students Category), and Dr Yukiko Uchida, Program-Specific Associate Professor at Kokoro Research Institute (Researchers Category). An additional prize, the Wacoal Award, was presented to each of the awardees by Mr Hironobu Yasuhara, President and Representative Director of Wacoal Corporation. Recipients of Honorable Mention Awards, Dr Shizue Ohsawa, Lecturer at the Graduate School of Biostudies, and Dr Ayumi Asai, Program-Specific Associate Professor at the Unit of Synergetic Studies for Space, were presented with plaques by Professor Yamagiwa and additional prizes by Mr Yasuhara.
Professor Yamagiwa delivered an address celebrating the awardees and encouraging them with the expectation that they will enjoy ongoing success. Mr Yasuhara also delivered a congratulatory address.
Following these addresses, the Tachibana Award recipients delivered their research presentations: "Observational studies of black holes; staring at the monster in space" by Ms Shidatsu, and "Culture and happiness; experimental cultural psychological studies of relationship-oriented happiness in Japanese society" by Dr Uchida.
The ceremony closed on a high note with an address by Professor Toshio Sugiman, Executive Vice-President for Student Affairs and Library Services.
