'Wood Science School' and 'Tropical Tree Biotechnology Initiative' were held in Indonesia by RISH

The Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH), Kyoto University, and Research and Development Unit for Biomaterials (RDUB), Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), jointly organized 'Wood Science School'. The School was held at RISH Satellite Office, in RDUB, Cibinong, Indonesia, from February 26 to 27, 2007. Following that, 69th RISH Symposium 'Tropical Tree Biotechnology Initiative' was held at Researech Center for Biotechnology, LIPI, Cibinong, Indonesia on February 28.

RDUB, a research institute of LIPI which is engaged in MOU with Kyoto University, is one of the partner institutions of RISH. The exchanges between the two institutions expand over 30 years, and these successful past exchanges let to these series of activities.

What is 'the School'?
The School was designed not only to offer a broad introduction of RISH but to nurture and inspire young Indonesian researchers in the filed of Wood Science. The reason why it was held in Indonesia is to give opportunities for researchers without coming to Japan. This is the second time such a School was held in Indonesia.

The lectures were delivered by 7 Kyoto University researchers and 3 Indonesian researchers covering the topics of the wide range of fields from basic to advanced research on wood science and technology. Eventually this could meet the needs for 60 participants.

A researcher who works in Liaison Office in Jakarta, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, participated as a guest and presented an overview of the Office activities.

With regard to the symposium, it was composed of 2 RISH researchers and 3 LIPI researchers, who engage in various fields of Tropical Tree Biotechnology. Over 100 researchers across Indonesia came to the symposium and discussed with great interest.

Another purpose of these events is to develop young Japanese researchers to become more international and enhance the quality of research. Therefore RISH provided these beneficial opportunities for the young researchers in RISH to join.

Exchange Students Field Trip Report

A 2 day field trip to Himeji and Shikoku was held November 24(Fri.)-25(Sat.) for the exchange students taken under the wing of the International Center/the Foreign Student Division.
The trip has been held every year since 2004 during November, the students having had approximately 2 months to settle with their new everyday lives. The purpose is to offer students a chance to mingle with each other as well as to receive an insider's view of Japan. On this particular trip, 37 students from 14 countries and regions participated, accompanied by 1 professor and 2 staff from the Foreign Student Division.

Their first day, they set out by bus from the Main Gate at 8 am and made their way to Himeji Castle. Three English speaking tour guides (volunteers from the city) showed them around the castle, explaining to them how it stood ground through the wars, a lot of the reasons lying on how the castle was built.
Their next stop was the Seto Bridge Museum (the 9.4km bridge connecting Honshu--the Main Island--with Shikoku--the 'Four Prefectures') and viewed exhibits of the construction. They also had a spare time to enjoy the sea breeze and get their circulation going.
They spent their night in a 'ryokan' (or Japanese style hotel) near the Kotohira Shrine, where they were ate dinner purely Japanese style, had the pleasure to soak in an open air hot-spring (an 'onsen'), and sleep on 'futons' spread out on 'tatami' mats. They were also given the privilege to sing 'karaoke' after dinner, some students singing songs from their home countries and some being brave to try 'enka'.

After breakfast the morning of the second day, they bowed their heads and put their hands together at Kotohira Shrine, but only after climbing up 1,368 steps that led up to it. Readers must be reminded that there is only one way up and they couldn't cheat!
And after going another 1,368 steps (this time in the opposite direction), they visited an Udon School, where they became 1 day students, learning first hand from an 'udon' master the recipe and the secret to make just the perfect 'udon'. Although they were all beginners, they were all given a 'Certificate of Completion' at the end of the lesson. And guess what they had for lunch!
Their last stop of the trip was at 'Uzu no Michi', a bridge with glass floors where natural whirpools (or 'uzu') were created. Some days the sea is just totally flat, no 'uzu' at all, but this time they were in luck, the 'uzu' being not so much in size, but 'uzu' all the same.
They reached the Main Gate of the university at 8 pm Saturday. All of them received rolling pins that we used to make 'udon' with, a token from the Udon School. The masters all departed with smiles on their faces, and they ended their trip, a success!

The DPRI signs a MOU with the PGSDPT, Kangwon National University

The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University, concluded a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation with the Professional Graduate School of Disaster Prevention Technology (PGSDPT) of Kangwon National University in Korea. The signing ceremony between Director Yoshiaki Kawata of the DPRI and Dean Do-Young Jung of the PGSDPT took place at the DPRI.

In 2006, Kangwon National University and Samcheok National University merged following which Kangwon National University was reorganized, and, as a result, became one of the largest universities in Korea.

The Korean government has provided Kangwon National University with a subsidy to conduct research and education in the scientific field of disaster prevention. This subsidy is a handsome research fund at the rate of 1.5 billion yen for three years. One of the biggest reasons for this is to reduce the impact of disasters around Kangwon-do area, because Kangwon-do is the university's home city and it faces very serious problems: natural calamities which have struck quite often in the past.

The two institutes began an academic collaboration four years ago. The catalyst was Professor Kaoru Takara's visit to the Kangwon-do area. He is one of the faculty members of the DPRI and first visited to research the field of Typhoon disaster damage investigation in 2002. This MOU is based on the beneficial and fruitful exchanges between the two institutes. The DPRI has so far concluded 21 MOU at the department level with various institutes around the world. However, this is the first MOU with Korea.

With the signing of this MOU, a new comprehensive and efficient partnership will be built between the two institutes. Thus, the DPRI hopes to actively promote academic exchange and enhance educational services through joint research, joint hosting of symposia, and an exchange of faculty members.

International Students Field Trip Report

The International Center and the Foreign Student Division went on a field trip to Hida-takayama & Shirakawa-go area from the 25th to the 27th of September.
The purpose of the trip was to have the new international students interact with each other and visit local areas to experience Japanese culture. This year, 32 international students enjoyed the trip.

We all assembled in front of the Clock Tower and traveled by bus to Gujo-hachiman, Gifu Prefecture. There, we visited the Hakuran-kan where we can learn about the history of Gujo-Hachiman, walked about the castle town and tasted Shogi-water (one of the 100 clearest waters in Japan.) Then we moved to Takayama City, visited Takayama Festa Forest to experience the world of Takayama Matsuri, one of the three most famous festivals in Japan, and stayed over night.

The next morning we enjoyed shopping at the morning market and visited the Shirakawa-go, one of the world culture heritages registered in UNESCO. After that, we visited Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Garden, one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan. That night we soaked in a hot spring and eased our fatigue of travel.

On the third and final day we visited Tojinbo cliffs and Eiheiji Temple in Fukui Prefecture, before getting on the road back to Kyoto.

With nice weather, the trip provided an excellent opportunity for those students who had only spent a short time in Japan to make some friends, and experience things like Japanese Yukatas and hot springs.

The Establishment of the International Exchange Seminar House

The "International Exchange Seminar House" (built using "J.Pod" wood construction method) was completed recently at Kyoto University, and a signboard raising ceremony was held.
This building is part of an effort to internationalize the campus in accordance with the "Kyoto University international strategy" for the promotion of international exchange activities.
The building is made from excess Japan cedar collected from the Kyoto University research woodland in Wakayama prefecture, and built using the Kyoto University patented building method "J.Pod" wood construction method. The method is revolutionary in that it utilizes juvenile, superfluous wood (e.g., those collected during woodland pruning) to create "frames" which are joined together to provide structures with increased earthquake resistance. This method holds great promise for the protection of forest resources, the revitalization of the timber industry, and the promotion of ji-shan, ji-shou (sustainable agriculture) in addition to affording greater protection during earthquakes.
International Exchange Seminar House will provide a venue for Kyoto University students and international students to get to know each other, such as through joint classes on Kyoto culture or research on Japan. It is hoped that the international students will be inspired by the warmth and fresh woody scent of the building while they study Japanese culture.
