From 30 October through 1 November 2017, the 8th Southeast Asia Network Forum took place in Hanoi, Vietnam, with support from the Kyoto University ASEAN Center. The event was held in conjunction with the "Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) and Kyoto University International Symposium on the Education and Research of the Global Environmental Studies in Asia", hosted by HUST from 30 October through 1 November.

The Southeast Asia Network Forum is a platform for KU researchers to share their latest findings with communities across Southeast Asia, focusing on topics of interest to local residents. It is organized by local alumni associations in collaboration with the University's Graduate Schools and research institutes, along with universities in the host country. The eighth Forum was the second to take place in Vietnam, following the first event that was held in November 2013.

The Forum was preceded by a meeting of KU Vietnamese Alumni, held on 29 October, in Hanoi with 140 attending. The Vietnamese alumni were joined by members of the Hanoi Yoshida Association, which consists of Japanese KU graduates residing in the city. The gathering was also attended by senior University officials, including President Juichi Yamagiwa and Dr Masao Kitano, executive vice-president for education, information infrastructure, and evaluation.

On the following day, the 8th Southeast Asia Network Forum took place featuring research presentations by seven KU graduates of the Graduate Schools of Science, Engineering, and Global Environmental Studies. The session explored expansion of international research exchange, sparking lively discussion among the presenters and the audience.

The 8th Forum was followed by the 9th event in Indonesia on 1 November, with the 10th Forum scheduled to take place in Thailand on 24 February 2018.
