Welcome Party for Newly Enrolled International Students - May 15, 2006 -

Kazuo OIKE

Good evening, everyone.

There are 22,452 students and 2907 full-time academic staff members at Kyoto University. This year, there are a total of 1240 foreign students attending Kyoto University. In addition to this, there are also many staff members and researchers from foreign countries as well.

Kyoto University has great strengths in every academic field, whether it is in the area of theory, technology, or fieldwork. I would like you all to take full advantage of these strengths of the university in advancing your own research and education.

Kyoto is a city which has a rich cultural history which spans over 1200 years. It is also a city which has embraced the modern age while preserving its cultural heritage. While you are studying at Kyoto University, I would like to encourage you to experience the history and culture of Kyoto. I hope that upon your return home you will be able to share these experiences with those in your home country.

Many of the Japanese students are quite shy at first; however, once you get to know them they will be very happy to teach you many things. I would like to ask you on behalf of the Japanese students to make the effort to approach them and give them the chance to get to know you better.

While you are at Kyoto University, please be sure to make friends from all around the world. I hope that the friendships and experiences you create here will help you in the future as you contribute to international society.

I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all of you for attending this party. Let us all have a good time this evening.

Thank you very much.
