2013 General Assembly of Kanto Ryokuyokai (April 19, 2013)

2013 General Assembly of Kanto Ryokuyokai (April 19, 2013)

The 2013 General Assembly of Kanto Ryokuyokai was held on the Shinagawa campus of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology with thirty-five members in attendance, ranging from the school's first graduates (the 1950 graduates) from the Faculty of Agriculture's former Department of Fisheries to younger generations such as those who graduated in 1997.

Kanto Ryokuyokai is the Kanto branch of Ryokuyokai, an alumni association comprised of Kyoto University graduates from the respective former departments of fisheries of the Graduate School of Agriculture and the Faculty of Agriculture, as well as their marine science laboratories.

Before the general assembly, Mr. Takami Morita (senior research coordinator from the Research and Technological Guidance Division, Resources Enhancement Promotion Department, Fisheries Agency [Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries] and a 1994 graduate from the Faculty of Agriculture) and Mr. Mitsuru Okoso (director of a nonprofit organization called Global Campus Japan and a 1985 graduate from the Faculty of Agriculture) gave lectures, respectively, titled "Radioactive Substances in Marine Products" and "Efforts for Community Revitalization through 'Tourism-based Community Development.'" Both lectures were followed by a lively exchange of questions and answers.

The participants further deepened their friendships across generations of graduates at the general assembly and a social gathering that followed. Also participating in the event, from outside the Kanto region, were President Keiji Washio from the National Fisheries University (1976 graduate from the Faculty of Agriculture) and Professor Nobuaki Arai from Kyoto University's Graduate School of Agriculture (Fisheries and Environmental Oceanography Laboratory, Division of Applied Biosciences since April 1 of this year; 1980 graduate from the Faculty of Agriculture), both of whom talked about the latest news from laboratories regarding the marine sciences.

The event came to an end when all the participants sang Biwako Shuko no Uta (Lake Biwa Rowing Song), following as usual the introductory verse recited by Mr. Ken-ichi Yamashita (one of the first 1950 graduates from the former Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture).
