Kyoto U, Sega Sammy to partner on gambling addiction research (5 December 2017)

Published on

A Kyoto University team led by Professors Sakiko Yoshikawa and Toshiya Murai -- of Kokoro Research Center (KRC) and the Graduate School of Medicine, respectively -- will begin a three-year study on gambling addiction in partnership with Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. The KRC-led project, beginning in April 2018, will involve collecting and analyzing player data from overseas casino facilities, with a focus on the process of addiction development.

Using data on actual casino players, the researchers hope to identify signs that precede engagement in dangerous gambling behavior.

Findings are expected to help elucidate the mechanisms of addiction, and in Japan, aid the development of measures to prevent the onset, progression, and recurrence of problematic gambling.
