KyotoU, Fujitsu collaborate on medical AI applications (24 January 2018)

On 24 January, Kyoto University, Fujitsu Limited, and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd announced that they have established the Department of Medical Intelligent Systems at the University's Graduate School of Medicine. This new joint project will focus on medical applications of artificial intelligence (AI).

The two-year undertaking involves the use of electronic patient records and other medical data from Kyoto University Hospital, and the Fujitsu Group's AI technology, Fujitsu Human Centric AI Zinrai. Participating KyotoU physicians and bioinformatics researchers, together with AI engineers from the Fujitsu Group, will use these data and technologies to explore new approaches to diagnostic support and drug discovery, with a view to accelerating R&D spawning a new generation of advanced medicine.

The project is anticipated to contribute to various other areas of society as well, with plans underway to study applications of the resulting database and insights to health insurance and other related fields.
