On 20 September 2018, Professor Yasuyuki Kono, Kyoto University’s vice-president for international strategy, attended a ceremony held by the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) to celebrate its 60th anniversary. USTC has been a partner of Kyoto University since the conclusion of a General Memorandum for Academic Cooperation and Exchange between the two institutions in 2005.

With over 500 attendees, the ceremony began with opening addresses from Professor Bai Chunli, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Mr Li Jinbin, secretary of the Anhui Provincial Party Committee. A keynote lecture was then given by Professor Xinhe Bao, president of USTC, followed by addresses from Professor Yong Qiu, president of Tsinghua University, and from representatives of USTC alumni, faculty, staff, and students. The ceremony also included a presentation of USTC’s future vision as a "world top-class university with Chinese characteristics".

During his visit, VP Kono also visited USTC's National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, where he met with its director, Professor Yalin Lu, to discuss the potential for future research collaboration.
