Call for applications: 2016 working student scholarship

Kinro Gakusei Enjo Kai, a "working student aid organization", is accepting applications for its "exemplary working student" scholarship. An "exemplary working student" is defined as being highly motivated to study, and, being in financial need, works part-time to pay for academic and living expenses.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  1. Be enrolled in a Kyoto University undergraduate degree program and NOT expecting to leave the University or Japan at the end of the current academic year
  2. Either be working part-time in order to pay for academic and/or living expenses due to having little or no support from family or relatives, or have made notable public-service contributions in Kyoto
  3. Be exemplary in both character and scholarship

Selection process

  1. Kyoto University accepts the applications
  2. Kyoto University selects a candidate
  3. Kyoto University recommends the candidate to Kinro Gakusei Enjo Kai
  4. Kinro Gakusei Enjo Kai selects the scholarship recipient (early February 2017)
  5. Kinro Gakusei Enjo Kai holds a ceremony to award the scholarship to the successful candidate (early March 2017)

  2. Seikatsu kiroku ("account of daily life"), in Japanese
    • Format and length
      The manuscript must be in Microsoft Word format, and around 1,200 Japanese characters in length
    • Content
      • Suggested topics include: what motivated the applicant to pursue university education, the applicant's academic and personal circumstances, and goals
      • A personal, rather than academic, tone is preferable
      • The manuscript must include a title
  3. Academic transcript
  4. Shotoku shomeisho (income certificate) of the principal income earner of the applicant's household
    Obtain a FY2015 income certificate from the local municipal or ward office.
  5. Gensen choshu hyo (income tax withholding statement) indicating the applicant's part-time work income
    Those who began working for their current employer during or after January 2016 must submit pay statements for the last three months.

Remarks

  • All of the above documents (1-5) must be submitted during the application period to the Scholarship Affairs Office, Student Affairs Division, Education Promotion and Student Support Department
  • The student selected as the candidate will be requested to resubmit documents 1 and 2

Other

  • Kyoto University shall not use the information supplied by the applicants for purposes other than those related to the scholarship program described herein (for selection, recommendation, management, etc)
  • The seikatsu kiroku manuscript submitted by the successful candidate will be published in a compilation, which Kinro Gakusei Enjo Kai will deliver to its members as well as to donors and other stakeholders in order to raise awareness about the realities of being a working student
