Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have become a global phenomenon since 2012, the "Year of MOOC", challenging the status quo of university education.
Kyoto University has been offering its own MOOCs since May 2013, when it became the first Japanese charter member of edX, an international MOOC consortium founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012. The courses that have been presented through KyotoUx, Kyoto University's edX platform, include "Evolution of the Human Sociality: A Quest for the Origin of Our Social Behavior". This began in October with President Junichi Yamagiwa as the teacher. Several more KyotoUx courses are under preparation for delivery over the coming months.
The symposium "How MOOC Evolves University Education" will be keynoted by Kathy Pugh, Vice President of Education Services at edX. She will discuss the latest worldwide trends and developments of note under the title, "The Past and Future of MOOCs: What Have We Done and Where Are We Going?"
The event also comprises presentations on the current state of KyotoUx, findings from user surveys, and individual courses, as well as discussions on prospects and expectations
