Educators often work on devising a classroom teaching plan that aims to facilitate active and deep learning, but without a clear idea of how to go about assessing the learning outcomes, or whether such assessment is needed in the first place.
Following last year's event, the Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Higher Education (CPEHE) is hosting another symposium this year featuring Harvard University Professor Eric Mazur. This time, the focus will be on exploring effective approaches for assessing the outcomes of project- and problem-based learning sessions and massive open online courses (MOOCs) on the basis of actual cases.
Recognized worldwide for his pioneering work on Peer Instruction, Professor Mazur is now concentrating on the study of learning assessment as his primary research project. In the forthcoming symposium, he is expected to share a fresh perspective on the subject as he reports on the practice of project-based learning assessment at Harvard University. Researchers from the CPEHE, meanwhile, will give lectures highlighting the achievements and issues in learning assessment, based on examples of peer assessment in MOOCs and performance assessment in problem-based learning.
The event also includes a panel discussion, which may lead to illuminating exchanges on MOOC-related topics, as one of the participants, CPEHE Director Toru Iiyoshi, is working at the forefront of Japan's MOOC research and implementation.
