We would like to express our most sincere sympathies and condolences to those who experienced loss or injury due to the earthquake which occurred in Osaka in the early morning of 18 June 2018.
The day the earthquake occurred was the anniversary of Kyoto University’s foundation, which is an annual holiday for the institution. However, as soon as the earthquake occurred, relevant faculty and staff members came to the University to assess the extent of any damage in accordance with our risk management procedures. As of 19 June, we have confirmed that no serious damage has been found at any of our facilities, and there should be no obstruction to the University's operations.
As there is a risk of aftershocks, however, we encourage all of our students, faculty, and staff members to remain cautious, particularly when close to concrete-block walls and other concrete structures.
At present, Kyoto University has no plans, at the institutional level, to cancel any lectures or classes. If this situation changes due to aftershocks, we will post relevant information on our website and KULASIS (the Kyoto University Liberal Arts Syllabus Information System). It is possible, however, that some individual faculties, departments, or faculty members may cancel lectures or classes. Please be sure, therefore, to check the website of your faculty/department of affiliation.
Counseling and support is available for students who have been affected by the earthquake. Such students should consult with the Education Promotion and Student Support Department, or with the staff in charge of educational affairs in their faculty/department of affiliation.
We urge all students, faculty, and staff members to read the Kyoto University Earthquake Safety Manual, and familiarize themselves with appropriate earthquake response and safety procedures.
The University will continue striving to improve its strategies and preparation for responding to disasters and other emergencies, including more effective utilization of our Safety Confirmation System, which is utilized in the event of earthquakes with a seismic intensity of at least six lower on the seven-point Japanese scale in the municipalities of Kyoto or Uji.
