On 13 September, the Graduate School of Medicine commemorated the launch of “Innovation Hub Kyoto” with a ceremony, special lectures, and a reception. Innovation Hub Kyoto occupies the third and fourth floors of the Med-Pharm Collaboration Building that was completed early this year.

The opening ceremony took place in the Building's Fujita Hall, with remarks from Dr Nagahiro Minato, executive vice-president for research, planning, and hospital administration, and a congratulatory address from Kyoto City Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and a facility tour followed.

Commemorative lectures were then delivered in Inamori Hall of Shiran Kaikan. Opening remarks were given by Dr Shinji Uemoto, dean of the Graduate School of Medicine, and Dr Kazuhisa Nakayama, dean of the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. These were followed by a congratulatory address by Mr Masanori Nagai, director of the Life Sciences Division, Research Promotion Bureau, science ministry MEXT. Ten speakers then delivered lectures on medical innovation, including Mr Yutaka Hishiyama, executive director of Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED).

Finally, the reception took place in Yamauchi Hall of Shiran Kaikan, with opening remarks and a toast from Mr Shinji Asonuma, executive vice-president for industry-government-academia collaboration.

The celebratory events drew more than 200 attendees, not only from companies with offices and laboratories in the Hub, but from numerous other organizations in the public, business, and financial sectors.

Innovation Hub Kyoto aims to foster biomedical ventures and promote commercialization of research by offering a place for diverse professionals -- such as academic researchers, investors, and businesspeople from startup and established companies -- to gather, network, and exchange information.
