On 9 February, Kyoto University Hospital hosted the 17th Cell/Regenerative Medicine Study Seminar at Shiran Kaikan. The seminar series was launched in November 2009 as part of efforts to promote development and applications of regenerative medicine research using embryonic, somatic, and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, and for the advancement of medicine.
Following opening remarks from KU Hospital Director Nobuya Inagaki, Dr Takeru Makiyama, assistant professor of KU Hospital's Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, delivered a lecture entitled "Drug efficacy evaluation and development of new treatment for inherited arrhythmia using human iPS cells". Three academic lectures then introduced their latest achievements in the field: "Peripheral nerve regeneration using Bio 3D Conduit fabricated by the bio 3D printer technology" by Dr Ryosuke Ikeguchi, associate professor of the Rehabilitation Unit of KU Hospital's Department of Orthopedic Surgery; "Generation of intestinal tissues using iPS cells" by Dr Yoshiya Kawaguchi, professor of the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA); and "Research on neurological diseases using iPS cells" by Dr Keiko Imamura, program-specific research center assistant professor of CiRA.
Finally, Dr Hiromitsu Nakauchi, professor at Stanford University, delivered a special lecture entitled "Interspecies blastocyst complementation: Radical treatment for diabetes by transplantation of iPSC-derived islets". The ensuing Q&A session wrapped up the seminar with a lively discussion.
