From 21 October to 3 November, the Department of Environmental Engineering of the Graduate School of Engineering (GSE) held an "Education Program for Human Resources with Global Views in Environmental Science and Technology" for doctoral and master's students from Tsinghua University (THU), China, and University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia. The program was supported under the Wild and Wise Collaborative Learning Program. It aims to find solutions to global environmental problems by fostering common understanding of issues, and is comprised of field trips to environmental facilities, cultural exchange activities, and a student-run workshop.

The first half of the 2018 program took place in the Kanto region, where participants visited a wastewater treatment plant, a waste incineration facility, a water-purification facility, and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), to learn about state-of-the-art technologies that support the region's environmental infrastructures.

In the second half, the THU and UM students took part in cultural exchange activities, paid a courtesy visit to the dean of GSE (Professor Masahiro Ohshima), and received research training at Kyoto University and analytical training at private companies in the Kansai region.

On 1 November, together with the participating KyotoU students, the group visited Kansai Recycling Systems Co, Ltd and Panasonic Corporation to learn about the state of electric waste recycling in Japan. The afternoon of the following day was devoted to the fourth "International Workshop on Environmental Issues for Young Students and Researchers by Young Students and Researchers", organized by KyotoU students and held on the Katsura Campus. The participants, including a large number of undergraduate and graduate students from Kyoto University, presented their research and engaged in active discussion, leading to a greater common understanding of ongoing and forthcoming global environmental problems.

The entire program was planned and run by KyotoU master's and doctoral students, who also gained valuable professional development experiences.
