The Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability (GSAIS, or "Shishu-Kan") will present on Monday 18 December an international seminar, "SDGs: Future We Want”.

The lecturer will be Mr Tetsuo Kondo, director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Representation Office in Tokyo. He will be sharing his experiences of working in various countries to help local communities achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs), with a focus on the challenges he faced and solved as part of these efforts. He will also discuss, based on specific examples and together with student audience members, the knowledge and problem-solving skills needed to build a successful global career at an international organization.

Tetsuo Kondo (Director, UNDP Representation Office in Tokyo)

Mr Tetsuo Kondo assumed his current position in January 2014, after serving as Country Director of UNDP Chad 2010-2013. Earlier, he had worked as Deputy Resident Representative Programme/Operations, UNDP Kosovo (2007-2010); Senior Humanitarian Coordination Advisor, UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT, 2006); Senior Advisor, UNDP Regional Centre in Bangkok (2005-2006); Special Advisor to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), UN Mission for Assistance to Iraq (UNAMI) in Amman and Bagdad (2004); and Special Advisor/Senior Programme Advisor, Bureau for Resources and Strategic Partnerships (BRSP), UNDP New York (2001-2004).

Before joining UNDP, he held various positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MoFA): Vice-President of UNDP/UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) Executive Board (Representative of Western Europe and Others Group, 2000); First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations, New York (1996-1999); and Assistant Director, Law of the Sea Office, MoFA Treaty Bureau (1992-1996). While with MoFA, he also worked at the UN Bureau (1989-1992) and the Embassies of Japan in Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1986-1989) and in France (1982-1986).

Mr Kondo holds a master's-equivalent degree from Jones International University, USA, and a BA in Economics from Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan.

He also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Global Health Policy at the University of Tokyo (2011- ).
