From 31 August to 19 September, the Graduate School of Informatics held a Seminar on Informatics for six students from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). The program was organized with support from Kyoto University provided under the Wild & Wise Collaborative Learning Program. The six participants were enrolled at the Graduate School as short-term international students for the duration of the Seminar.

UTeM was one of the hosts of the 2015 Seminar on Informatics in Asia, organized by the Graduate School of Informatics to promote its programs to local students. The annual event also helps the School forge ties with the region's universities and research institutes.

In the Seminar on Informatics in Kyoto, participants took part in laboratory tours on the 4th and 5th September to learn about a comprehensive range of informatics fields. The students then had research internships on the 7th, 8th, 11th, and 12th at three labs from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics, headed by Professors Hiroshi Nagamochi, Yoshito Ohta, and Nobuo Yamashita. With members of these labs joining the UTeM students as assistants, the training promoted cross-cultural understanding among all the participants, and helped them hone their communication and leadership skills as well as patience through the experience of working together across different languages and ways of thinking.

Another highlight of the Seminar was an opportunity to take part in the 2017 Kyoto University Summer Design School, held 13-15 September with the Graduate School of Informatics as one of the organizers. The UTeM students joined participants from other universities, government organizations, and businesses in small-group discussions and together explored solutions to real-life social problems.

The Seminar also included a Japanese Culture Experience Tour, featuring visits to temples, a tea ceremony, and a chance to wear kimono. In addition, the students stayed in a typical Japanese-style house for three days to experience what it would be like to live in Kyoto as a student.

The program concluded with the UTeM students presenting on their experiences from the research internships and the Summer Design School.

It is hoped that the participants will go on to apply their skills and knowledge gained from the Seminar to further advance their studies, and promote Kyoto University as a long-term study destination to their fellow UTeM students by sharing their experiences of the program.
