Energy science short program held for ASEAN students (9-19 Jan 2018)

20 Feb 2018

Organized jointly by the Graduate School of Energy Science and the Human Security Development Educational Unit, the "Winter Seminar on Human Security Development and Energy Science" took place 9-19 January 2018 with 18 undergraduate students taking part from nine ASEAN countries. This program was co-supported by the Wild & Wise Collaborative Learning Programs.

The program featured nine lectures, all delivered by teaching staff of the Graduate School of Energy Science and the Institute of Advanced Energy (IAE): "Solar Energy", "Energy Storage", "Wind Turbine", "Energy Grid, Liquid Hydrogen, and Superconductivity", "Hydrogen Energy", "Energy Efficiency", "Technologies for Reducing CO2 Emissions", "Biomass Energy", and "Global Energy Situation". There was also a workshop on “Energy and Sustainability”.

Other activities included field trips to two energy-related facilities in Hyogo Prefecture: Akashi Works of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd and the R&D Center of Iwatani Corporation. Participants learned about various aspects of renewable and non-renewable energy technologies, including the utilization and potential social, economic, and technical hurdles for adoption in Japan.

Throughout the Seminar, students worked in four groups, engaging in debate and discussions, and making presentations. For the final day, the groups were given the task of estimating the energy requirements of a hypothetical country, and developing a plan for a power generation system that would best serve local needs.

The program also included cultural activities in Kyoto, as well as opportunities to engage in multinational and multidisciplinary discussions on human security, energy, environment, and other topics of interest.
