Indonesian Association of Kyoto University Alumni (HAKU, Himpunan Alumni Kyoto University) and Brawijaya University (UB, Universitas Brawijaya), hosted the 6th Southeast Asia Network Forum on the UB campus in the city of Malang, Indonesia. The event was co-hosted with the Kyoto University ASEAN Center, Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), and Graduate School of Engineering.

Launched in 2015 and co-hosted by KU and local alumni, the Network Forum aims at sharing the University's latest academic achievements with communities across the region, especially topics that people in the region are keenly interested in. Over the years between 2007 and 2014, HAKU had hosted eight KU Southeast Asia Forums, which were predecessors to the Network Forum.

The 6th Network Forum focused on urban and spatial planning, an eminent challenge for the rapidly urbanizing Indonesia. The event was held partially in conjunction with the 3rd International Conference: Planning in the Era of Uncertainty (ICPEU 3 2017) hosted by UB. Six keynote lectures were delivered, attracting 305 participants, including 22 KU alumni and other ICPEU attendees.

Day one began with addresses by BU executives, followed by keynote lectures by Professor Kiyoshi Kobayashi of the KU Graduate School of Engineering and Professor Hans Westlunds of KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.

A meet and greet was held after the forum events with the BU president as the host, providing a valuable opportunity for attendees and HAKU members to exchange views in an informal setting.

On day two, Dr Emil Elestianto Dardak, mayor of Trenggalek, Professor Masaaki Okamoto of CSEAS, and Professor Ir Surjono of UB delivered keynote lectures. Mr Masaharu Oda, an administrator at the KU ASEAN Center, then presented an overview of Kyoto University. An active Q and A session ensued, followed by animated discussion during the break time.
