With the cooperation of University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Kyoto University has opened a KU San Diego Liaison Office adjacent to the UCSD campus. KU and UCSD have built a collaborative relationship through co-hosting international symposia, and exchanging researchers and students, all based on the memorandum for academic cooperation and exchange.

UCSD is ranked 41st in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-2017, and first in the world's best "Golden Age" universities, a ranking of universities founded between 1945 and 1966.

Similar to KU, UCSD excels in biomedicine and medical sciences. Located in a home for a number of biotechnology ventures, UCSD has engaged in molecular biology- and medicine-based entrepreneurship education. Through the Liaison Office, KU hopes to strengthen university-wide efforts to create international collaborative research projects and to support cooperation with industry on the West Coast of the United States.
