To mark the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH), a commemorative event comprising lectures, an official ceremony, and a dinner reception was held at Uji Obaku Plaza.

Around 250 people attended the ceremony and lectures, which were given by Professor Toshitaka Tsuda, Director of RISH, Professor Emeritus Tetsuya Sato of the National Institute for Fusion Science, and Professor Emeritus Mitsuyoshi Yatagai from the University of Tokyo. Professor Tsuda spoke on the theme, "Invitation to the Science of Humanosphere: Ten Years of Research Achievement in Summary", based largely on the book of the same title published as part of the anniversary celebration, while the speeches by Professors Emeritus Sato and Yatagai were entitled, respectively, "Modern Western Civilization at its Limit: A Need for a Paradigm Shift" and "Building a Comfortable Environment: The Current State and Future of Botanical Product Research".

The commemorative ceremony began with opening addresses from Professor Tsuda and Professor Hiroshi Matsumoto, President of Kyoto University. The congratulatory addresses were delivered by Mr Naoki Kimura, Director of the Scientific Research Institutes Division, Research Promotion Bureau, Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and Mr Takashi Onishi, President of the Science Council of Japan (SCJ), both of whom expressed their high expectations that the RISH as a Joint Usage / Research Center would play a leading role in the promotion of humanosphere education and research around the world. Messages of congratulations from the RISH's partner institutions based in Japan and overseas were also read out.

At the celebratory event afterwards, welcome addresses were delivered by Professor Emeritus Misato Norimoto and Professor Shuichi Kawai, Dean of the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability. Congratulatory speeches were made by representatives of partner institutions — Professor Ryoichi Fujii, Vice President of Nagoya University, and Mr Keiji Takeda, Vice-President of Kyoto Seika University, with which the RISH had collaborated in the creation of a manga booklet on the basics of humanosphere research. The toast was proposed by Kiyoshi Yoshikawa, Executive Vice-President for Research, Kyoto University, and the event ended on a high note as more than 150 attendees from both within and outside the University enjoyed a dinner reception in a festive atmosphere.
