Singapore Rakuseikai Meeting Held (February 2, 2013)

Singapore Rakuseikai Meeting Held (February 2, 2013)

Singapore Rakuseikai is a regional Kyoto University alumni association consisting of Kyoto University graduates residing in Singapore (Japanese and Singaporeans who studied at Kyoto University). Its membership is rapidly growing, exceeding a hundred by now, thanks to the accelerated moves of Japanese corporations to emphasize business in Singapore. Having held social parties and golf competitions several times a year to promote friendship and exchange among its members, the association organized a meeting on the occasion of a visit by Dr. Yuzo Ohnishi (Special Assistant to the President). Also attending the meeting were other staff members from Kyoto University.

About fifty members of Singapore Rakuseikai, including Chairman Masakazu Yoshida (1967 graduate from the Faculty of Engineering) and Secretary Kensuke Unoki (1998 graduate from the Faculty of Law), were present at the meeting. In response to a call from the university, Mr. Masaya Okumura (2008 graduate from the Faculty of Economics) from the Kyoto University Bangkok Alumni in Thailand also participated in the event. Participants informed each other of their activities in Singapore and Thailand, respectively. Then, following a speech by Chairman Yoshida, Dr. Ohnishi summarized recent news from the university. Later, the results of a golf competition held on the day of the event were presented, and the meeting proceeded in a friendly atmosphere with many smiles and laughter. Finally, after a closing speech by Vice-Chairman Lau Yew Hoong (1983 graduate from the Faculty of Engineering), participants all sang the cheer song Shinsei no Ibuki and the meeting was successfully closed.

Recently, Kyoto University's regional alumni associations have been officially founded in many ASEAN countries--such as Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia--and have conducted active operations. Kyoto University is willing to cultivate further cooperation with its overseas alumni active in the ASEAN region.
