Lectures which prompted lively discussions

The April meeting of Tokyo Ichihachi-Kai, which belongs to the Architectural Alumni Association of Kyoto University, was held at the Kyoto University Tokyo Office.

Tokyo Ichihachi-Kai is comprised of graduates from Kyoto University's Undergraduate School of Architecture (Faculty of Engineering) residing in the Kanto region. It holds biannual meetings (April 18 and October 18) that feature a tour of currently popular architecture or lectures on architecture.

This time, the program featured lectures on measures that were taken in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake. Executive Vice-President Yuzo Ohnishi began by giving a lecture on the current situations regarding the university and the university's response to the disaster, with a focus on the activities by the External Affairs Department. Then, Mr. Toshiyuki Inoue (deputy director-general; Housing Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism [MLIT]; 1978 graduate, Faculty of Engineering) summarized the MLIT's national-level response to the disaster.

Following the lectures, a social gathering was opened with a speech and toast by Mr. An (1972 graduate, Faculty of Engineering), a Tokyo Ichihachi-Kai steering committee member, where about ninety participants enjoyed conversations and friendly exchange with each other. During this time, Mr. Komiyama (1971 graduate, Faculty of Engineering) informed the participants about a memorial tower for the Architectural Alumni Association of Kyoto University, and Associate Professor Kiyoshi Takeyama from the Graduate School of Engineering reported on the current status of the Undergraduate School of Architecture.

Finally, Mr. Miwa (1974 graduate, Faculty of Engineering) concluded the meeting on behalf of the organizing members and participants, and everyone went home with a promise to meet again in October.
