Kyoto University Philippines Alumni Organized (April 17, 2012)

At the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in the city of Los Baños, the Philippines, the Kyoto University Philippines Alumni was founded by former Kyoto University students from the Philippines.

Established by seven founding members, the alumni association was led by Dr. Jose V. Camacho, Jr. (dean of the Graduate School, UPLB) on the occasion of the "Symposium on Japanese Development Assistance on S&T Human Resource Development in the Philippines," which was held at UPLB, co-hosted with the South Luzon branch of PHILAJAMES (Philippine Association of the Japanese Government Scholars). The event was attended by officials from the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines and the JICA Philippines Office as well as Executive Vice-President Yuzo Ohnishi as an invited guest.

At the symposium--which was attended by nearly thirty participants, including those from the University of the Philippines and PHILAJAMES members who had studied in Japan--Executive Vice-President Yuzo Ohnishi talked about Kyoto University's exchange with the Philippines, its tradition of human resource development accumulated primarily through the acceptance of foreign students, and his hopes for the further development of interaction in the future. Also at the event, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines presented information on the latest programs for studying in Japan, the activities of students after returning to the Philippines, and the advantages of studying in Japan.

The newly founded alumni association is expected to further develop its organization in the future by contacting Filipinos now residing in other regions of the country who once studied at Kyoto University and thereby strengthening its network.
