9th Kyoto University Southeast Asian Forum (Hosted by HAKU) (January 28, 2012)

The 9th Kyoto University Southeast Asian Forum was held at Mulawarman University in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, organized primarily by Himpunan Alumni Kyoto University (HAKU).

HAKU is an alumni association consisting of former Kyoto University international students currently residing in the Republic of Indonesia, which was inaugurated on July 29, 2007 at Kyoto University's liaison office in Jakarta with then President Kazuo Oike in attendance. HAKU stands for "Himpunan Alumni Kyoto University," which means "the Indonesian association of Kyoto University alumni" in the Indonesian language, but also suggests the Chinese character haku in the words hakushiki ("having extensive knowledge") and hakugaku ("having extensive background learning").

The Kyoto University Southeast Asian Forum has been held every year since FY 2007, alternating between Indonesia and Thailand, in order to return to the Southeast Asian society Kyoto University’s academic outcomes highly valued in the world.

This year, under the theme of "Technical and Social Innovation on the Use of Natural Resources," many Kyoto University researchers and experts joined together to hold vigorous discussions. The forum opened with a speech by HAKU President Suhardja Wiramihardja, followed by a congratulatory speech from Executive Vice-President Yuzo Ohnishi. Then, after recent news from Kyoto University as well as lectures on environmental conservation efforts in East Kalimantan and the current situations of abandoned coal mines, a panel discussion was held with Professor Kosuke Mizuno from Kyoto University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies as a panelist. The event ended with great success.
