General Meeting of Kyoto University Korean-in-Japan Alumni (December 3, 2011)

The 25th general meeting of Kyoto University Korean-in-Japan Alumni was held in the city of Kyoto with the participation of fifty members.

Kyoto University Korean-in-Japan Alumni (KUKIJA) consists of Korean students and graduates from faculties and graduate schools residing in Japan. Starting up an alumni website ( http://kukija.org/) in November 2010, it aims to establish not only communication among members, but also a mentor system that enables senior members to give advice to the younger members as well as other arenas for mutual consultation among members. It also issues newsletters on an annual basis.

The general meeting was opened by Secretary General Lee Taehun serving as the master of ceremony (1978 graduate from the Faculty of Engineering). At the outset, President Yuk Suil (1967 graduate from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences) gave a welcome speech. Then, Professor Tetsuji Atsuji from the Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies (assistant to the executive vice-president) briefed participants on the current situations of Kyoto University and gave a lecture titled "The Origins of Kanji (Chinese Characters)." Later, Mr. Zhang Beonghang (1970 graduate from the Faculty of Agriculture), the former CEO of a foreign affiliated company, gave a lecture titled "My Footsteps as the CEO of a Foreign Affiliated Company for Twenty-four Years," which was based on the knowledge and experience he gained through his career. The lectures by the two speakers were very interesting, and the members and Korean students from outside Japan listened attentively.

At a social gathering following the lectures, after a commemorative photo of all participants was taken, speeches were given by guests representing the Ritsumeikan University Korean-in-Japan alumni association, the Korean alumni association of Doshisha University and the secretariat of Kyoto University Alumni. The party opened with a toast proposed by Advisor Zheng Heongmun (1955 graduate from the Faculty of Engineering). Participants strengthened their friendships, and before the end of the meeting each student coming from Korea spoke about his or her recent situations. The newcomers were presented with a commemorative gift, and the meeting ended with a closing remark by Vice-President Bae Hoon (1977 graduate from the Faculty of Economics) in a lively atmosphere.
