Kyoto University Regional Seminar (Kagoshima Seminar) and Social Gathering with Higashiyamakai (Kyoto University Kagoshima Alumni) (November 26, 2011)

Since 1997, Kyoto University has held regional seminars throughout the country to share with the public its accumulated intellectual assets and achievements from current educational and research activities and to benefit society at large.

This time in Kagoshima City, Professor Toru Fushiki from the Graduate School of Agriculture gave a lecture titled "The Science of Tastiness: An Attempt to Express Tastiness in Mathematical Expressions." The venue was packed to full capacity with 282 participants, including registered dieticians, researchers in the field of food culture, other people interested in food and nutrition, and young people such as high school students. After a lively question and answer session, the seminar was successfully concluded.

After the seminar, a banquet meeting with Higashiyamakai (Kyoto University Kagoshima Alumni) was held, attended by more than thirty alumni members, Executive Vice-President Yuzo Ohnishi, Professor Fushiki who lectured at the seminar, and other university staff members. After speeches by Chairman Tadanobu Hamasato from Higashiyamakai (1955 graduate from the Faculty of Letters) and Executive Vice-President Yuzo Ohnishi, the participants all sang the university song, followed by a toast from Satoshi Sechiyama (vice-chairman of Higashiyamakai and 1960 graduate from the Faculty of Economics). Participants enjoyed a friendly exchange of information and ideas, and the banquet ended on a happy note.
