USJI Week and a Meeting of Kyoto University Washington, D.C. Alumni

In Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, the University has jointly established the US Japan Research Institute (USJI) with Keio University, the University of Tokyo, Ritsumeikan University, and Waseda University. From February 4 to 11, USJI held USJI Week in Washington, D.C., to which the University sent Prof. Junichi Mori, director general of its Organization for the Promotion of International Relations. During USJI Week, symposia were held in which US and Japanese researchers as well as other participants discussed a wide range of themes, from East Asian security, reactivation of US-Japan relations, and educational exchanges to financial crisis and climate change. On February 8, the USJI Open House drew a variety of visitors.

USJI Week was held with the full support of the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. In addition, Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki gave a keynote speech on the theme of "Higher Education Reform." Expectations are high for USJI to continue assuming an important role as a source of information in the US capital on behalf of the Japanese higher education community. Going forward, the University will endeavor to support its activities.

In line with USJI Week, Kyoto University Washington, D.C. Alumni held its meeting on February 6. Despite the short notice, as many as six members, including President Takashi Muragaki and Executive Secretary Shinichiro Uemiya, gathered together to have a good time talking about the latest news regarding the University, Japanese students sent overseas, and other topics.
