Kyoto University's Response to the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami (March 17, 2011)

We wish to express our deepest sympathy to all those who have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami which struck the Pacific coast of the northeastern region of Japan on March 11.

Kyoto University's response to the disaster is detailed below. This notice will be periodically updated.

Current or already implemented measures

  • Confirmation of the safety of KU students, faculty and staff.
  • Confirmation of any damage to KU buildings and facilities.
  • Commence with undergraduate enrollment procedures and provide consultation to successful candidates.
  • Provision of assistance to students affected by the disaster (exemption from enrollment fees and tuition fees, provision of living allowances and scholarships).
  • Dispatching of medical and other staff from Kyoto University Hospital's Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT).
  • Dispatching of medical doctors from Kyoto University Hospital.
  • Establishment of the Earthquake Disaster Task Force.
  • Efforts to conserve electricity throughout the university.
  • Provision of information regarding postponed and cancelled events.
  • Measurement of environmental radiation on campus (readings taken at the Yoshida (main), Uji, Katsura, Kumatori and Inuyama Campuses).
      The measurements are being taken at the request of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. If any abnormal radiation levels are detected, a notice will be posted on this Web-page, and all academic and administrative departments of the university will be notified.
      NOTE: Current readings indicate normal radiation levels.

Measures to be implemented soon or currently being planned:

  • Material aid.
      We have received a request from the Japan Association of National Universities (JANU) to provide emergency supplies of food and other items. We will respond to the request using Kyoto University's stores of emergency supplies. JANU is currently in the process of determining the best way to transport the supplies, which will be dispatched as soon as a decision is made.
  • Fundraising campaigns for monetary donations etc.
  • Counseling and care for students and other university members affected by the disaster.
