The 5th Kyoto University Homecoming Day Commemorative Tokyo Lecture held

August 5, 2010

Prior to the 5th Kyoto University Homecoming Day on November 13 (Sat.), the Homecoming Day Commemorative Tokyo Lecture was held at the Tokyo Office. This lecture was themed on Ryoma Sakamoto, a key figure in Japan towards the end of the Edo Period, titled "Reading, Depicting and Contemplating Ryoma," given by Associate Professor Yutaka Tanigawa of the Graduate School of Letters.

In the lecture, Associate Professor Tanigawa gave a very interesting description of the short life of Ryoma based on historic references such as letters written by Ryoma and various biographies of him.

Participants were extremely satisfied, with many comments like: "With the recent Ryoma popularity, it was very interesting to be able to contrast the actual life of Ryoma with what is depicted in the NHK period drama," and "With actual proof based on correspondence, I was able to understand the hidden meanings behind Ryoma's actions."

After the lecture, information was provided on the Homecoming Day event, special exhibits at the Kyoto University Museum and the Historic Exploration Tour, and the event came to a successful close.
