The Center for Archaeological Operations was created in 1977, and is concerned with the study of the archaeological heritage and the development of techniques for the preservation of such sites and antiquities. On the campus of Kyoto University, and in its subsidiary areas throughout the country, there are many sites of interest, including the Kitashirakawa Jomon site, the Nogakubu Jomon site, the Jomon cemetery at the Botanical Gardens, the Shirakawa Kitadono site of the later Heian period, the Ama Yayoi site situated in the Head Farmstead at Takatsuki, the tumulus site at the Abuyama Seismological Observatory, and Jomon and Yayoi sites at the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory.
